Steel tooth tricone bits have several advantages in drilling operations, especially in certain types of formations and drilling conditions.

Effective in hard and abrasive formations: The steel teeth of tricone bits are relatively robust and can withstand high pressures and impacts. In hard rock formations such as granite and limestone, the steel teeth can penetrate the rock by applying high compressive forces, gradually breaking up the rock mass. Capable of handling interbedded formations: In formations with alternating layers of different hardness, steel tooth tricone bits can adjust to the varying conditions. The teeth can adapt to the differences in rock properties, allowing for more consistent drilling compared to some other bit types that may be more sensitive to formation changes.

As the bit rotates and drills, the steel teeth wear in a way that can create a self - sharpening effect.
