Tricone bits have three cones, and each cone is equipped with teeth. During the drilling process, the cones rotate and roll on the bottom of the wellbore. The teeth on the cones continuously impact and crush the rock, which can break the rock effectively and improve the drilling speed.
 

Tricone bits can be designed with different tooth shapes and structures according to the characteristics of different rock formations. For soft formations, bits with large - sized teeth and shallow cone angles are often used, which can cut the rock more effectively; for hard formations, bits with small - sized teeth and deep cone angles are selected to increase the drilling pressure and improve the rock - breaking ability.
