Steel tooth tricone bits are renowned for their aggressive cutting behavior. The sharp, hardened steel teeth are designed to dig into the rock with force. In soft to medium - hard rock formations, these teeth can quickly shear and gouge the rock, creating large rock fragments. The teeth's geometry and arrangement on the cones are optimized to maximize the cutting efficiency. For instance, in shale or soft sandstone, the steel teeth can penetrate the rock easily, resulting in a high rate of penetration. This aggressive cutting action allows for faster drilling progress compared to some other bit types in suitable formations.

 

The steel teeth are made from high - quality alloy steel that can withstand significant impact forces. During drilling, as the bit rotates and the cones roll along the rock surface, the teeth repeatedly strike the rock. In hard and brittle rock formations, this high - impact resistance is crucial. The steel teeth can endure the shock of hitting the hard rock without breaking or deforming easily.
